Documentary Highlights at #HIFF38

HIFF is proud to present an outstanding selection of documentary feature films at this year’s festival, covering everything from climate change to live streamers on six-figure salaries to boy bands, and all the vibrant and important stories in between. But with so much on offer it can sometimes be difficult to make up your mind on what to watch, so we asked our Program Associate Duncan Caillard to pick out some of his favorites from the lineup. What’s FREE at #HIFF38

On top of screening some of the year’s best films from around the world and a bevy of exciting events showcasing great emerging talents, HIFF has an exciting range of free events throughout the festival to check out. From the HIFF VR Lounge at SALT on opening weekend, to student showcases and the Daniel K Inouye Institute Student Film Initiative, to a symposium on the state of indie filmmaking in Hawaii (coffee and donuts provided), to an informative panel discussion on the making of the 'ōlelo Hawai'i version of MOANA, to newly added free screenings of ECHO IN THE CANYON at Courtyard Cinema and the surfing film MOMENTUM GENERATION from HBO Documentary Films, we've got some great free events at #HIFF38!

#HIFF38 Spotlight: GREEN SCREEN chronicles the ongoing plight to save our environment

HIFF38 is proud to present GREEN SCREEN, a section concentrating on some of the most pressing environmental issues facing the world today, with the inspiring change-makers who make it their mission to solve them. We’ve cast a wide net programming this year’s selection, with films from Central Africa to Indonesia to California, showcasing the local price of environmental destruction, the global interconnections of the problems, the stunning beauty of the natural world, and the ways our personal choices make a difference. Whatever your outlook, make sure that Green Screen is part of your #HIFF38!

Just Added to #HIFF38: Awards hopeful THE FAVOURITE, Music doc ECHO IN THE CANYON at Courtyard Cinema and North Shore surfing documentary MOMENTUM GENERATION

Although the #HIFF38 film program is finalized, the film programmers still take opportunities to fill select TBA screening slots during the Festival. For the upcoming fest, we’ve added some last minute additions and they’re world-class films ranging from an Oscar hopeful with a brilliant performance by Olivia Coleman and the latest film from the director of THE LOBSTER; to the definitive music documentary about the groundbreaking rock and folk musicians that lived in Laurel Canyon and defined a generation through music; and a definitive surfing film executive produced by Robert Redford that looks back at the ragtag team of surfers from the North Shore that defined a sport. Better yet, two of these films are FREE TO THE PUBLIC!

#HIFF38 Spotlight: Taiwanese Films shows the great diversity from the island nation

SPOTLIGHT ON TAIWAN is HIFF’s annual section that presents the very best in Taiwanese cinema, showcasing all its diversity in genres and peoples that make this tiny island nation one of the most unique countries in Asia. This year’s spotlight is no different, presenting works from emerging filmmakers that graduate from the top film schools in the nation, to commercial fare like the box-office hit GATAO: RISE OF THE KING, a gangster epic akin to yakuza classics, to horror fare like THE ROPE CURSE that presents the traditional ghost possession story but with a Taiwanese twist, bridging customs and superstitions that are unique to the island. Finally, the Festival is honored to present the directorial debut of Heather Tsui with LONG TIME NO SEA based on her own experiences with an indigenous dance troupe.
