#HIFF38 SOUND X VISION — From The Byrds to BoyBand Fandom to Awkwafina

SOUND X VISION is HIFF’s annual section devoted to films about music. This year’s section spotlights the Golden Age of ‘60s rock music in ECHO IN THE CANYON, to a celebration of intergenerational boy band fandom in I USED TO BE NORMAL: A BOYBAND FANGIRL STORY, to the Asian American indie FICTION & OTHER REALITIES inspired by the life of Korean American singer-songwriter Bobby Choy. We’ve also got the forgotten ‘80s cult classic THE LEGEND OF THE STARDUST BROTHERS and a special IN CONVERSATION WITH AWKWAFINA on closing weekend.

#HIFF38 Spotlight: Programmer's Korean Film Picks and actress MOON SO-RI honored with Career Achievement Award

With some of the best films in the program at HIFF38, this year’s Korean film line-up is one we are particularly proud of. Featuring 9 films that run the gamut from award-winning arthouse dramas, to blockbuster epic period action films, the HIFF38 SPOTLIGHT ON KOREA is a truly exciting program. Two of the Festival’s SPOTLIGHT ON KOREA films are nominated for awards—the moving drama LAST CHILD for the KAU KA HOKU AWARD (emerging filmmaker), and coming-of-age tale ADULTHOOD for the NETPAC AWARD for Best Asian-Pacific Film. And the Festival is incredibly proud and honored to welcome renowned actress MOON SO-RI with her directorial debut, clever satire THE RUNNING ACTRESS, and bestow her with the Halekulani Career Achievement Award.

#HIFF38 Spotlight: Films from auteurs and new talents comprise SPOTLIGHT ON CHINA

SPOTLIGHT ON CHINA is our annual New Chinese cinema section, presenting a varied array of films from the Middle Kingdom. As China becomes the eventual number 1 film market in the world, it is more relevant than ever to showcase arthouse and indie films that are being pushed out by big budget fare. With this year’s spotlight, the Festival is honored to present the Hawaii premieres of ASH IS PUREST WHITE, the latest from Jia Zhangke, and LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, the second feature from festival darling Bi Gan. Both films had their premieres at Cannes. Other films include Zhang Yimou’s return to martial arts historical epics SHADOW, which opens HIFF38 and THE UNITY OF HEROES, a return to old school wuxia character Wong Fei Hung.

A spin-off of the Festival’s Fantastic Asia program, this year’s Extreme Asia hones in on the ‘midnight movies’ genres our filmgoers love the most.
