Here are the #HIFF38 Audience Award Winners presented by Hawaii News Now

The ballots have been tabulated and were announced this morning by Billy V on Hawaii News Now, the sponsor of the #HIFF38 Audience Awards. Here are the best films at HIFF as determined by festival audiences: Best Narrative Feature goes to Hirokazu Kore-eda's SHOPLIFTERS. Best Documentary Feature goes to Naalehu Anthony's MOANANUIĀKEA: ONE OCEAN, ONE PEOPLE, ONE CANOE . Finally, Best Short Film goes to Ty Sanga's HAE HAWAI'I.

38th Hawaii International Film Festival presented by Halekulani Announces Winners

November 17, 2018 (Honolulu, HI) - The 38th edition of the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) presented by Halekulani announced their Jury winners at a private awards gala yesterday evening. The Best Made In Hawaii Feature Award winner is BETHANY HAMILTON: UNSTOPPABLE directed by Aaron Lieber. Added film screenings for #HIFF38 Closing Weekend on Oahu

As previously announced, we have included late additions to the HIFF38 festival program—THE FAVOURITE, MOMENTUM GENERATION and THE UPSIDE—as well as added encores of popular films as requested by HIFF audiences such as SHOPLIFTERS and Okinawan film BORN BONE BORN. We have also added an extra screening of Closing Night Film MOANANUIĀKEA: ONE OCEAN. ONE PEOPLE. ONE CANOE. at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18. Finally, we have added encore screening slots for the MADE IN HAWAII Award Winner, BETHANY HAMILTON: UNSTOPPABLE and the KAU KA HŌKŪ Award Winner, PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF DESIRE, which were announced at the HIFF Awards Gala on November 16.

#HIFF38 Spotlight: PACIFIC SHOWCASE brings the best cinematic stories from First Peoples of the Pacific

PACIFIC SHOWCASE sponsored by Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) presents the latest films by Pacific Islanders or with a subject matter that takes place in the Pacific. These 6 features and 7 short films that comprise the Pacific Showcase Shorts program, represent the voices and stories of First peoples of the Pacific—From Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, Kiribati, Guam, and Easter Island. As part of the Pacific Showcase, PIC is also honoring the legacy of the late Merata Mita with the PIC Trailblazer Award. Her son, filmmaker and archivist Heperi Mita, will accept the award on her behalf, as well as in continuing the legacy that was started by Merata in championing Maori and native filmmakers on the big screen.

#HIFF38 MADE IN HAWAII Features and Shorts in competition

MADE IN HAWAII is a premiere section at HIFF with the intent to shine a light on the emerging and veteran filmmakers working in Hawaii today, presenting our stories that capture the unique cultures and communities that make Hawaii one of the most diverse spots in the world. Although the ‘I’ in HIFF stands for ‘International,’ the Festival’s mission is to also promote place-based cinematic stories and present them to our local, national and international audiences. MADE IN HAWAII section is sponsored by Hawaii Film Office. Both competitions are sponsored by the Nichols Family Film Fund offering $10,000 in cash prizes this year.
