Courtyard Cinema in May: Free screening of RAMEN SHOP, food vendors on site & new location at Victoria Ward Park

This month’s Courtyard Cinema screening will be extra special with a FREE screening of RAMEN SHOP from Singaporean director Eric Khoo and starring #HIFF38 Maverick Award honoree Takumi Saitoh! The screening will take place at a different location than the usual Courtyard Cinema venue and will be held at Victoria Ward Park (location where last month’s Noodle Fest took place).

Director Spotlight - Lulu Wang, THE FAREWELL (#HIFFSpring19 Closing Night Gala)

Lulu Wang is a classical pianist turned filmmaker. Born in Beijing, raised in Miami and educated in Boston, Lulu is a recipient of the Chaz and Roger Ebert Directing Fellowship, which was awarded at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Her first feature film, POSTHUMOUS, starring Jack Huston and Brit Marling was released by The Orchard. She is also a 2014 Film Independent Project Involve Directing Fellow and a 2017 Sundance Fellow invited to participate in the FilmTwo Initiative for second time feature filmmakers.

#HIFFSpring19 Documentary Spotlight: Eight documentaries consist of an Oscar winner and films 'Straight from Sundance'

4 out of the 8 documentaries that will be screening are straight from the Sundance Film Festival and one is an Oscar winner for Best Documentary (a free screening of FREE SOLO at Courtyard Cinema). From AMAZING GRACE, a long lost documentary chronicling the seminal recording of Aretha Franklin in her prime, to the little known Japanese residents of the Bonin Islands in Masa Fox’s debut film BETWEEN TIDES, to the world premiere of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPER CW (*CANCER HAPPENS), about one of Honolulu’s most beloved scenesters and her fight against cancer, to the Sundance International Documentary Grand Prize winner SEA OF SHADOWS, the Spring Showcase documentaries represent a broad cross-section of subject matters that continue to highlight that documentaries are truly experiencing a renaissance today.

#HIFFSpring 19 Closing Night Film THE FAREWELL with director Lulu Wang in attendance

HIFF is honored to present THE FAREWELL starring Awkwafina (#HIFF38 Maverick Award honoree) as the HIFF Spring Showcase Closing Night Gala on April 14. This crowd-pleasing family drama based on director Lulu Wang’s own life, was first produced as an award winning segment of THIS AMERICAN LIFE, and adapted into the crowd-pleasing hit that had audiences cheering and crying at its world premiere at Sundance. An extra bonus to the screening is that the director herself, Lulu Wang, will be in attendance to introduce her film and participate in a post-film Q&A.
