HIFF and DANIEL K. INOUYE INSTITUTE Launch Middle and High School Student Short Film Contest

This summer, the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) invites High School and Middle School students to create works for a new short film contest. In partnership with the Daniel K. Inouye Institute (DKII), the contest calls on young students to create films inspired by Senator Inouye’s historic speech from the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

HIFF Ohana Sneak Peek: ADRIFT Advance Screening with producers and writers Aaron & Jordan Kandell in attendance

HIFF is proud to present a special advance screening of the real survival-on-the-sea film ADRIFT starring Shailene Woodley (THE DESCENDANTS, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, DIVERGENT) and Sam Claflin. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (EVEREST, 2 GUNS, 101 REYKVJAVIK, and co-written and produced by Hawaii’s own Aaron and Jordan Kandell, this rip-roaring adventure at sea, based on a incredible true story, represents the Hollywood-worthy talent that is coming from the Islands. HIFF Spring Showcase Mid-Point: Last Chance To See These Japanese Films!

Japanese films, hands down, are the most popular films at HIFF. At this year’s Spring Showcase, there are a mix of world and U.S. premieres and arguably one of the best collection of films from Japan in years (according to some of our longtime members that praised the films that screened this past weekend). Many of these titles are having their encore and final screenings this week, so don’t miss out on your last chance to see these crowd-pleasing films that represent the best in Japanese cinema. The Golden Age of Documentaries continues at 2018 HIFF Spring Showcase

We live in the golden age of the documentary. As life becomes more interesting, and sometimes, stranger than fiction, these real life stories are presenting windows into the conflicts and connections that we all have in the current state of the world. The Docs at the 2018 HIFF Spring Showcase present a broad cross-section of historical icons, pioneers, tastemakers as well as shining a light at social issues that are needed to be told. Three of the eight documentaries featured are also straight from their world premieres at the Sundance Film Festival!
