All of the films in Awards Buzz are major festival premieres that have won awards and garnered rave reviews from world-class film festivals like Cannes, Venice and Toronto. Experience Award-Winning Virtual Reality at the HIFF VR Lounge

Virtual reality technologies takes us closer to the action than ever before, bringing us face-to-face with some of the most vital issues and stories in the world today. For the first time at the festival, we are proud to present the HIFF VR Lounge, bringing together a selection of exciting contemporary VR projects from around the world to SALT at Our Kakaako. Held at The Barn at SALT at our Kakaako over the Veteran’s Day weekend from Saturday November 10 to Monday November 12, from 11:00am to 9:00pm, the HIFF VR Lounge is an exciting space to hang out, try out virtual reality, and experience the buzz of the festival! And best of all, IT’S FREE!

#HIFF38 KAU KA HŌKŪ Filmmaker Award Competition for Emerging Filmmakers of the Asia-Pacific Rim

October 16, 2018

HIFF was an annual stop for the late film critic Roger Ebert, who hailed the festival as “a showcase for emerging filmmakers from the Asia and Pacific Rim.” The KAU KA HŌKŪ, which is loosely translated as “shooting star,” will be awarded to an emerging filmmaker (first or second feature film) from the Asia-Pacific Rim and North America. Both fiction and non-fiction feature films will be nominated by the festival programmers and winners will be chosen by an international jury.

#HIFF38 MADE IN HAWAII Features and Shorts in competition

MADE IN HAWAII is a premiere section at HIFF with the intent to shine a light on the emerging and veteran filmmakers working in Hawaii today, presenting our stories that capture the unique cultures and communities that make Hawaii one of the most diverse spots in the world. Although the ‘I’ in HIFF stands for ‘International,’ the Festival’s mission is to also promote place-based cinematic stories and present them to our local, national and international audiences. MADE IN HAWAII section is sponsored by Hawaii Film Office. Both competitions are sponsored by the Nichols Family Film Fund offering $10,000 in cash prizes this year.
