Pick the winners of the Academy Awards and win a dinner for two at Halekulani!

The nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards were announced yesterday. As part of the excitement leading up to HIFF's Oscar Night America gala on February 26th, we're holding a "Pick the Winners" contest that's open to everyone, 18 and older. The prize is a dinner for two at the Halekulani Hotel's Orchids restaurant (up to a $200 value). Entries for the contest start today and conclude the day before the Academy Awards are hosted.

The Golden Globes are finished, now we're gearing up for Oscar Night America!

I hope you were watching the Golden Globes this past weekend, since Hawaii walked away with the prize for the Best Motion Picture - Drama category for THE DESCENDANTS, with George Clooney also winning the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama category. We showed many of the top nominated films here at HIFF last fall, and we're eagerly awaiting the release of the nominations for the Academy Awards, which will happen on January 24th.

Also of note is that THE ARTIST (EuroCinema Hawaii) won the Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical category, and also Best Original Score and Best Actor for Comedy/Musical by Jean Dujardin. Not many people had heard about this film when it played at HIFF, but with the exposure from the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards we're sure you'll get another chance to see it in Hawaii.

Some other HIFF shown nominated films and actors/actresses which have a good shot at an Oscar nomination are: WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (Tilda Swinton) and THE KID WITH A BIKE (Belgium), also from our EuroCinema Hawaii selection.

HIFF is gearing up for our annual fundraiser event, Oscar Night America on Sunday, February 27 at Halekulani. At the event, guests will be able to watch an advance telecast of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, and indulge in a fabulous custom "Oscar" dinner menu. The evening will also include a Red Carpet Walk, Better Brands' Oscar Cocktail Bar, display of 2011 Porsche vehicles, and Bambooth's fun photobooth!

2011 Oscar Nominated Short Films

I had a chance to see the Oscar Nominated Short Films for 2011 last week, and here's my take on them. There are ten films in all, five animated and five live action. These films are playing for a limited time at the Kahala Consolidated Theater, so see them while you can! Also, the animated feature film The Illusionist and Best Foreign Film nominee Biutiful are playing at Kahala. Read more for details about the short films.

Nominations Announced for the 2011 Academy Awards

The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards (to be held February 27, 2011) were announced this morning. You can see a full list of nominations here, but we wanted to talk about some of the less obvious picks this year. First, HIFF showed the following films in 2010 which are up for nominations:

Also of note are the entries in the Foreign Language Film category, most of which you may not have seen at this point. They are:

Javier Bardem (Biutiful) is also up for a nomination in the Actor in a Leading Role category. The film competed for the Palme d'Or award at Cannes last May. Our blogger Dana talked about Dogtooth in this post from July 2010. In a Better World is playing now at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, along with Incendies. Outside the Law is a very controversial film about the Algerian struggle for independence from France.

The list of nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 25th, 2011. It was also recently announced that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will be co-hosting the event.

HIFF has 8 films submitted for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars!

Every year there are 5 finalists for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. At this time, 65 countries have submitted their best film to be considered for the award. Out of those 65 films in contention, HIFF is now screening eight of them: CARANCHO, NUUMMIOQ, ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW, PEEPLI LIVE, SON OF BABYLON, CONFESSIONS, MONGA, UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES.

The director of 2009 Oscar award-winning film DEPARTURES, Yojiro Takita attended HIFF's Oscar Night America party on March 7, 2010. He spoke about how HIFF premiered his film in the USA in October 2008, and how the exposure led to his film being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
