You are visiting the Welcome Page of the 28th annual HIFF Fall Festival! We're pleased to present 154 films from 36 countries this year. This year's selections are truly eclectic: from the crowd-pleasing to visionary, presenting cinematic visions that are unique, inspirational, sometimes challenging, but always a true film festival experience. PROGRAM GUIDE DISCREPANCIES

The Schedule on pages 12-13 is correct. There are some errors on individual film listings, this are listed below.

Darling of the Mountains (Page 27) - The Oct 12 5:30pm screening is wrong. It should be Oct 17 at 6:00pm.

Half - Life (Page 28) - Both times/dates are wrong. Correct showtimes: Oct 13 at 8:00pm & Oct 14 at 3:00pm.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The (Page 42) - Both times/dates are wrong. Correct showtimes: Oct 17 at 6:30pm & Oct 19 at 7:15pm.

  • SWEETS (CANDY) - We had technical difficulties with the first screening of this short film from Shanghai, so you can see it again. It's playing with OCEAN of PEARLS 10/15 at 4:00PM.
  • CHIEF - New screening added: 10/18 at 12:00 PM. $5 admission, includes a Q&A with the director, Brett Wagner and the Samoan star of the film.

Oct 13: Both remaining screenings of NOHO HEWA: THE WRONGFUL OCCUPATION OF HAWAII will be free! They are: Friday, 10/17 at 3:30pm & Sunday, 10/19 at 6:45pm

Oct 11: Several films have been changed or added today.

Oct 8: The times/dates for many UH Manoa screenings were corrected. The correct dates/times can be found here. Also, the UH screenings will be held at the Architecture Auditorium, not the Art Auditorium as previously noted.

Oct 7: Our Closing Night Reception will be on Saturday October 18, from 9:30pm to 11:30pm at the O Lounge. Mix, mingle and meet some of the film celebrities. $20 admission, party only (does not include closing night film), non-hosted bar and pupus for 300 people. Buy tickets here.

Sept 24: Pacific Island Film Seminar (October 11th) moved to 11:30am instead of 12pm.

MORNING COMES SO SOON

Set in the beautiful central pacific country of the Marshall Islands, MORNING COMES SO SOON is the story of Leban, a Marshallese high school student who falls in love with Mei-Lin, a Chinese girl who is new to the island. What begins as a typical teenage love story quickly becomes a bizarre tragedy as the opposition they must face from family and friends becomes unbearable. This film deals with the issues of suicide and racism which are two of the biggest problems facing youth living in the Marshall Islands. In fact, the RMI has one of the leading suicide rates in the world. The issue of racism has become more serious recently as more and more foreigners have moved to the islands. » More

SAILFISH

Set against the social turmoil of China’s Cultural Revolution, SAILFISH is the story of 12-year-old champion swimmer Yue Haiyang. His father, a kindhearted intellectual, always encouraged the young boy's dream of becoming China's greatest swimmer. However, his dreams are abruptly shattered when his father is killed, his house is confiscated and he and his mother are forced into the countryside for reeducation. Six years later, with the help of his childhood friend, Gao Ming, and the love of his life, Bai Ling, he is able to rejoin the swimming team. Does he still have what it takes to win? In a quest to fulfill a lifelong dream, friendship and loyalty are tested as the three friends wade through the waters of personal struggle and political unrest. » More
