“HIFF TUESDAY SCREENINGS” SCHEDULE
MARIA FULL OF GRACE
September 7, 2004
USA, 2003, Spanish with English subtitles
Directed by Joshua Marston
The film tells the story of one young woman’s journey from a
small Colombian town to the streets of New York. A bright, spirited
17-year old, Maria Alvarez (Catalina Sandino Moreno) lives with three
generations of her family in a cramped house in rural Colombia and
works stripping thorns from flowers in a rose plantation. The offer
of a lucrative job involving travel – in fact, becoming a drug “mule” – changes
the course of her life. Far from the uneventful trip she is promised,
Maria is transported into the risky and ruthless world of international
drug trafficking. Winner of the Sundance Audience Award.

KILLING MACHINE
September
14. 2004
Cambodia, 2003, Khmer with English subtitles
Directed by Rithy Panh
In 1975-79, the Khmer Rouge waged a campaign of genocide on Cambodia’s
population. 1.7 million Cambodians lost their lives to famine and murder
as the urban population was forced into the countryside to fulfill
the Khmer Rouges’ dream of an agrarian utopia. In S21, Panh brings
two survivors back to the notorious Tuol Sleng prison (code-named “S21”),
now a genocide museum where former Khmer Rouge are employed as guides.
Painter Vann Nath confronts his former captors in the converted schoolhouse
where he was tortured, though by chance he did not suffer the fate
of most of the other 17,000 men, women and children who were taken
there, their “crimes” meticulously documented
to justify their execution. Winner of the Best Documentary
award
at the Chicago
International Film Festival.

LE PETITE
LILI
September 28, 2004
France, 2003, French with English subtitles
Directed by Claude Miller
Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) stars as Lili, the love and
muse of Julien. At odds with the serenity of the breathtaking
French
countryside, Julien rebels against his mother and her
guests, while multiple intrigues
of lust and power play out behind the scenes. From LA
PETITE LILI’S
opening moments, one of the steamiest sexual encounters in film, director
Claude Miller’s modern adaptation of Chekov’s
The Seagull envelops the viewer with its lush visuals
while the layers
of distinction
between art and memory are shed.

IMAGINING ARGENTINA
October 5, 2004
USA/Spain/Argentina, 2003
Directed by Christopher Hampton
An Argentinean theatre director (Antonio Banderas) develops clairvoyant
powers, allowing him to envision the horrific torture that his “missing” journalist
wife (Emma Thompson) is subjected to by the military, during Argentina’s “dirty
war.” He is also haunted by visions depicting the fate of other
people’s loved ones. Against all odds and at terrible personal
cost, he is able to avert the military while tying together clues
surmised from his visions, in his desperate attempt to locate his
wife. Co-starring
Ruben Blades and Maria Canals.
