ARGENTINA
October 5, 2004
USA/Spain/Argentina, 2003
Directed by Christopher Hampton
An Argentinean theatre director (Antonio Banderas) develops clairvoyant powers,
allowing him to envision the horrific torture that his “missing” journalist
wife (Emma Thompson) is subjected to by the military, during Argentina’s “dirty
war.” He is also haunted by visions depicting the fate of other people’s
loved ones. Against all odds and at terrible personal cost, he is able to avert
the military while tying together clues surmised from his visions, in his desperate
attempt to locate his wife. Co-starring Ruben Blades and Maria Canals.

DAYS OF BEING WILD
October 12, 2004
Hong Kong, 1991, 94 min., Cantonese with English subtitles
Directed by Wong Kar Wai
Set in 1960, the film center of the young, boyishly handsome Yuddy,
who learns from the drunken ex-prostitute who raised him that
she is not
his real mother. Hoping to hold onto him, she refuses to divulge the
name of his real birth mother. The revelation shakes Yuddy to his very
core, unleashing a cascade of conflicting emotions. Two women have
the bad luck to fall for Yuddy. One is a quiet lass who works
at a sport
arena named Su Lizhen, while the other is a glitzy showgirl named Mimi.
Perhaps due to his unresolved Oedipal issues, he passively lets the
two compete for him, unable or unwilling to make a choice. As
Lizhen slowly
confides her frustration to a cop named Tide, he falls for her. The
same is true for Yuddy's friend Zeb, who falls for Mimi. Later,
Yuddy learns
of his birth mother's whereabouts and heads out to the Philippines.
DAYS OF BEING WILD, considered one of Wong Kar Wai's best films,
finally is
released in the US. The film stars the late Leslie Cheung and Maggie
Cheung, who will be honored at this year's LVHIFF with an Achievement
in Acting Award. Don't miss this seductive film!

SEDUCING
DOCTOR LEWIS
October 19, 2004
Canada, 2003, French with English subtitles
Directed by
Jean-François Pouliot
SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS is a beguiling story of a ragtag fishing community
on a tiny, impoverished island who must persuade a young Montreal-based
doctor (David Boutin) to live in their town in order to get a much-needed
new factory.
SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS (“La Grande Séduction”) has
the rare distinction of being selected for Sundance (Audience Award Winner,
World Cinema), Cannes (Closing Night, Director’s Fortnight) and
Toronto (Special Presentation). In French Canada, it grossed over
eight million dollars, topping even The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix
Reloaded, Pirates of the Caribbean and fellow home grown hit The Barbarian
Invasions. It went on to be nominated for thirteen Jutra Awards
(French-Canada’s Oscar), winning seven, and recently was nominated
for eleven Genie Awards (Canadian Oscar).
