Save the dates for 2006! HIFF's Official Oscar Night® Party: Sunday, March 5 Last Minute Gifts? HIFF champions the alumni directors of our festival! Check out these great and varied festival favorites, now available on DVD! There's something for everyone, from family to drama to indie to midnight action! These films are all great stocking stuffers!
Picture Bride (1995). The first locally produced independent feature film to achieve universal acclaim, PICTURE BRIDE premiered at the prestigious Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals. It is a story of the people who moved to a foreign land to work the plantations of early 20th century Hawaii. The late Kayo Hatta, the director of the film, was honored at this year's LVHIFF for her contribution to independent filmmaking in Hawaii. A perfect gift for film lovers interested in Hawaii's rich culture and history. Order online! Blood of the Samurai (2001, 2004). Local filmmaker Aaron Yamasato is Hawaii's resident Roger Corman! His BLOOD OF THE SAMURAI series, consisting of the schlock-heavy and blood-splattering award-winning original feature and the action-heavy and mythology building sequel/miniseries, is a testament to genre film. Complete with Asian-infused action, cursed samurai swords, a hot ninja girl and Ban Daisuke (yes, Kikaida himself) as the wise sensei - well, what more can you ask for?!? Both DVDs are available now. Order online before January 5th and receive 10% off by inputting the promo code BOTS. The Ride (2003). Director Nathan Kurosawa won HIFF's Hawaii Film & Videomaker Award and the Audience Award for his feature film THE RIDE! It's an engaging film for the entire family. A young and cocky California surfer, competing on the North Shore, is magically transported to turn-of-the-century Oahu, where Duke Kahanamoku teaches him the true spirit of aloha. THE RIDE, as of this holiday season, is sold exclusively at Borders Bookstores in Hawaii. Online sales, according to the official website, will be launched soon. Charlotte Sometimes (2002). Michael, a young mechanic, is forced to choose between a daring tryst with an alluring stranger and the habitual comfort of his bittersweet obsession: his beautiful young roommate. Film critic Roger Ebert was so impressed by local boy director Eric Byler's feature bow that he invited the film to his own Overlooked Film Festival. Subtle and "slice-of-life" and replete with sexual politics, CHARLOTTE captures the true spirit of "indie" cinema. Order online! Blog The festival has an official blog! Peer into the inner-workings of the festival programming team's warped and twisted minds as they regularly post about upcoming film events, DVD recommendations and the inside scoop on HIFF events...and the occasional snippets of an artistic manifesto.
