Thursday's Updates!
Thursday's Films!
Join us for Roger Ebert's DEMOCRACY IN THE DARK seminar, continuing Wednesday and Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts! Roger will be leading the audience through a frame-by-frame discussion of Alex Proyas' DARK CITY! And at the Dole Cannery, we'll be screening the Swedish director Maria Blom's darkly-comic debut feature DALECARLIANS and RACE IS THE PLACE (featuring local poet-activist Haunani-Kay Trask, writer Lois-Ann Yamanaka and comedian Andy Bumatai). There are also second screenings of the North Korean sports documentary A STATE OF MIND and Katsuhito Ishii's FUNKY FOREST. At 7:00 PM, see MASTER AND COMMANDER - and then join us Friday for a seminar with the film's director of photography, Kodak Cinematographer Russell Boyd.
LIVE Music and Films at the Hawaii Theatre!
World premieres of two Hawaii films with live performances by the Sons of Hawaii and Amy Gillom!
KEEPERS OF THE FLAME, a new one-hour documentary by Eddie and Myrna Kamae, chronicles the lives of three Hawaiian women who, perhaps more than any other 20th century figures, helped to save a Hawaiian culture that was in serious peril. The combined artistry and Aloha of Mary Kawena Pukui, ‘Iolani Luahine, and Edith Kanaka‘ole “helped to revive the flame of traditional Hawaiian culture—a flame that had almost died,” says Eddie Kamae in his on-camera introduction to the film. ALOHA LIVE: On The Road with Willie K. and Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, directed by Heather Haunani Giugni, is a funny and poignant road movie of this musical duo’s West Coast tour in 2003. It is filled with live concert scenes and on the road footage. This rockumentry is captured through the eyes of one remarkable cinematographer. Again, Heather Giugni and her one person crew, run up and down the west cost to capture through her lens the life on the road with two of Hawaii’s most incredibly talented musicians. 6:15 PM Hawaii Night: An Evening of Hawaiian Films & Music sponsored by Unity House Thursday's Schedule (Oct 27)
