"The Last Bissu" at the East West Center
By award-winning filmmaker and EWC Artist-in-Residence Rhoda Grauer
The East West Center is hosting a free screening of the new documentary by Rhoda Grauer: The Last Bissu - Sacred Transvestites of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. In the documentary, Saidi, the head of an almost dead religion searches for the next generation of sacred transvestites to carry on his tradition. His search leads him to Ancik, a young boy who knows he is ‘different’. Saidi explains, “We represent the gods. No one knows if the gods are male or female, and that is why we are both.” The boy follows Saidi into the mysteries of this ancient sect. Though set in an exotic location, the issues of gender, community and finding ones place in the world are universal. Filmed amidst the flaming colors of South Sulawesi, the film is a feast for the eyes as well as the mind. A producer, director and writer in the performing arts – live in the theater, on television and radio – for over thirty years, Rhoda Grauer has held executive positions with The Asia Society, Thirteen/WNET, the New York Public Broadcasting Station, American Ballet Theatre, The National Endowment for the Arts and The Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds in Italy. Working with the Asian Cultural Council and the Ford Foundation, Jakarta, she co-founded Yayasan Kelola, an Indonesian service organization for Arts and Culture. 7:00-9:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2005
