WOMAN OF BREAKWATER is something of an oddity: a new production company (Entertainment Warehouse), invests in a director historically known to fare poorly commercially (Mario O’Hara) casts unknown actors as leads (Cristofer King and Katherine Luna), and produces a film that works more as a series of vignettes than a coherent whole, and the end result: one of the best and most imaginative Filipino films of the year, as well as an invitation to the Cannes Film Festival. One might think they were actually trying to make a good movie? Inspired by the works of Bunuel and Fellini, the film is a testament to the reverse of the adage ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’ Read on about this surreal film at Indiefilipino.com. APRES VOUS: Screwball farce with a French twist of the uncomfortable and comically cruel.
As Phillipa Hawkins observes, Director Pierre Salvadori (who helmed WILDMAN, about a hit man desperate to retire) is back doing what he does best, making richly observed character-based dramatic comedies. A critical and box office hit in France, APRES VOUS boasts an expertly constructed script, an hilarious odd couple in Daniel Auteuil and comic phenomenon Jose Garcia, and pitch-perfect direction. Auteuil, whom American audiences may recognize from THE CLOSET, gives a Cesar-nominated performance as Antoine, the maitre d' who saves the life of an ungrateful stranger, Louis (thesped by comedian Jose Garcia) and then must make right the troubles of Louis' life. Don't miss the adorable animated opening credits! Trailer | Official Website | Tickets and Showtimes LOST IN TIME: Starring Hong Kong Starlet Cecilia Cheung! Come see Hong Kong ingenue Cecilia Cheung in LOST IN TIME. Her captivating and emotional performance of a young widow trying to make ends meet for her and her young son garnered Cheung the Best Actress prize at the Hong Kong Film Awards. From her '99 debut in Stephen Chow's KING OF COMEDY, Cheung has gone from pop idol discovery to accomplished actress. Derek Yee, director of LOST IN TIME, likens her to a student who can succeed in exams without studying. "What she has is inherent talent mixed with skills. She can delivery emotions very effectively." Read more of Yee's praises, as well as Cheung's history in the China Daily!
