GLOOMY SUNDAY: JULES AND JIM meets CASABLANCA meets SCHINDLER'S LIST

GLOOMY SUNDAY is a 1999 German melodrama about love and betrayal at a Budapest restaurant during World War II. The film screened over eighty weeks in Boston and over sixty weeks in Los Angeles. There's a theater in New Zealand that been playing the film for four years! The story is a melodrama about love and betrayal at a Budapest restaurant during World War II, full of high romance like those American films of the 1940s and long on atmosphere and Old World charm.

Bob Green in the Honolulu Weekly says HIFF has a real winner:

"First of all, disregard the title—Gloomy Sunday— and get yourself, if you’re a fan of good storytelling, to Hawaii International Film Festival’s showing of this charming but ultimately powerful story."

MONDOVINO

One of the rare non-fiction films to be shown in the Competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, MONDOVINO was a late entry into the race, having originally been honored with an rare out-of-competition Official Selection slot. When he is not making films -- his second feature, SUNDAY, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance -- helmer Jonathan Nossiter moonlights as a wine buyer for various New York restaurants. And it's not a job he wants to quit.

"I find the world of wine and wine-makers very salutary," he says. "It's much healthier in personal and social terms than the world of film.

"There are, he suggests, alarming parallels between the two businesses. Nossiter believes that just as Hollywood makes bland, standardized movies, Californian vineyards produce wine with little discernible character."

"The wine world is like a soap opera. It’s like Dallas. You have family conflicts, dynasties, the rich and the poor and all these generational struggles. I was interested in holding a mirror up to this world — sort of a drunken mirror."

MY MOTHER THE MERMAID: The Korean PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED

Our colleague and San Francisco International Film Festival programmer Roger Garcia sums it up pretty well in his write-up for this film.

"Although this film does not have Nicholas Cage and Kathleen Turner, it does have Park Hae Il and Jun Do Yeon, in this truly enchanting time travel tale of love in a bygone era. The beautiful scenery in the film was shot on Udo Island, a with pristine beaches, lookout points and colorful coral. Udo Island (Udo, meaning "cow" because the island is shaped like one) is a popular location used by the Korean film industry. 80% of MY MOTHER THE MERMAID was shot there. A truly enchanting place for a truly enchanting tale."

WINDSTRUCK: The Return of the Sassy Girl!

From the team behind MY SASSY GIRL, the seminal Korean box office hit that generated the current worldwide K-pop explosion, WINDSTRUCK reunites director Kwak Jae-yong with popular actress Jun Ji-hyun. Their winning formula of headstrong heroines entangled in absurd - yet heartfelt - romantic comedy continues in their latest smash hit. Filled with slapstick comedy, romance, and of course, the tides of destiny, this film will satiate the most ardent of Korean pop fans. The chemistry between Jun Ji-hyun (a true heartbreaker) and Jyang Hyuk (VOLCANO HIGH) is very strong. Nadine Kam of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin gave the film THREE AND A HALF STARS. Read her glorious film review!
