ONE MISSED CALL

One more day to PHANTOM BELOW!

It's just one more day until the Hawaii International Film Festival's World Premiere Screening of PHANTOM BELOW at the Hawaii Theatre Center, Thursday, March 31, at 8:00 p.m.

We hope to welcome the director in person this Thursday. Director Brian Trenchard-Smith helmed Timothy Bottoms in the television movie D.C. 9/11 - TIME OF CRISIS. Mr. Trenchard-Smith also directed wuxia hero Jimmy Wang Yu, Sammo Hung and George Lazenby in THE MAN FROM HONG KONG in 1975. The film was the first joint production between Hong Kong and Australia. Read Stephen Teo's cogent reappraisal of the film here!

Burl Burlingame, who knows a little about chasing enemy submarines, calls PHANTOM BELOW a "tautly written and sparely directed thriller that knows where it's going and gets there at flank speed."

MONDOVINO: "The wine world is a soap opera. It's like DALLAS."

One of the rare non-fiction films to be shown in the Competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, MONDOVINO was a late entry into the race, having originally been honored with an rare out-of-competition Official Selection slot. When he is not making films -- his second feature, SUNDAY, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance -- helmer Jonathan Nossiter moonlights as a wine buyer for various New York restaurants. And it's not a job he wants to quit.

"I find the world of wine and wine-makers very salutary," he says. "It's much healthier in personal and social terms than the world of film.

"There are, he suggests, alarming parallels between the two businesses. Nossiter believes that just as Hollywood makes bland, standardized movies, Californian vineyards produce wine with little discernible character."

"The wine world is like a soap opera. It’s like Dallas. You have family conflicts, dynasties, the rich and the poor and all these generational struggles. I was interested in holding a mirror up to this world — sort of a drunken mirror."

THROW DOWN: Johnnie To's Homage to Kurosawa
Nixflix

Johnnie To, the hardest working man in Hong Kong show business, is an auteur director, noted for reinventing and deconstructing genre films. His work ranges from melodrama (ALL ABOUT AH-LONG, which won Chow Yun-fat a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor, his first for a non-action role) to police dramas (P.T.U. and HIFF '04's BREAKING NEWS) to diva-driven superhero epics (THE HEROIC TRIO with Anita Mui -- it's the film that launched the careers of Maggie Cheung and Michelle Yeoh!)

Now Johnnie To pays homage to the great Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa with THROW DOWN, a film similar in cinematography, set design and story to Kurosawa’s influential Judo biopic, SANSHIRO SUGATA.

The Star-Bulletin says:

"To's poignant drama concerns Sze-To (Louis Koo), a judo champion who unexpectedly abandons the sport. Now an alcoholic pub manager, he finds potential redemption through an aspiring pop singer, Mona (Cherrie Ying), and the obstinate Tony (Aaron Kwok), who challenges him to a fight."

The film got a nod for Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards noted THROW DOWN as a Film Of Merit and the film won Best Original Screenplay at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.

Green Cine has a great interview with Johnnie To here!

Regretfully, HIFF's programming staff was only able to find a Spanish language trailer for Takashi Miike's horror epic ONE MISSED CALL.

However, we are indeed pleased to note that Ain't It Cool News says ONE MISSED CALL is "La pelicula mas aterradora del ano!"
