Kakkoi! LVHIFF News just nabbed an interview with the filmmakers behind METAL SAMURAI, a zany, new Japanese film about Matsudaira Desunoshin, a wandering samurai who is also a heavy metal guitarist. Sound crazy? That is not even the strangest part about this character. The swordsman also happens to be a gaijin ... In KISS makeup ... As in circa 1970s Paul Stanley. Clearly, this ain't your granddaddy's jidaigeki! Who would make such a movie and why? We'll clue you in right now!

The filmmakers from Toei-Kyoto Studios are in Honolulu for the Hawaii debut of METAL SAMURAI. In this exclusive interview, they talk about what inspired them, how this outrageous tale has reinvented their film studio and why they just love a rowdy American audience!

JASON SOEDA: Aloha, Kanesaki-san, Takahashi-san and Fukushima-san! Welcome to the 28th Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival. Are you guys excited about the film festival? I hear it is Fukushima-san and Kanesaki-san's first trip to Hawaii.

アロハ!兼崎さん、高橋さん、福島さん。 第28回ルイヴィトンハワイ国際映画祭へようこそ。福島さんと兼崎さんははじめてのハワイだと聞いています。映画祭がまもなくはじまりますが、どんな感じでしょうか?わくわくしてますか?

RYOSUKE KANESAKI: Yes. I'm both nervous and excited! Not only this is my first overseas trip; I've never even left my own country.

ドキドキわくわくしてます。 「ハワイに行く」ってだけではなく日本から離れることも初めてなので … 。

KAZUTAKA FUKUSHIMA: Aloha, Jason-san! I'm really looking forward to seeing the HIFF 2008 attendees who are coming from all over the place. And I truly hope that many people in Hawaii will come out and see our film!

世界中の人たちが集まるHIFFに参加出来、たくさんの方達に観ていただける事を非常に楽しみにしてます。


JASON SOEDA: Kanesaki-san, how did you conceive the idea for METAL SAMURAI? A gaijin samurai in heavy metal makeup is a pretty strange idea!

兼崎さんに質問です。ガイジン侍のヘビメタメーキャップって、すげえ変なアイデアだなあと思ったのですが。メタル侍のアイデアはどこからまれたのですか?

KANESAKI-SAN: I once saw a Metallica concert, and I was so impressed! That's when I had the idea to fuse heavy metal's vibe and fashion with the samurai genre. I figured that KISS would be the most understandable representation of metal music. And I made sure the impact of heavy metal music is felt throughout this samurai film.

メタリカのライブを見て大感動!メタルの大げさな格好良さをどうにか時代劇に取り入れられないものかと考えた時、解りやすさでいけばKISSだ!メイクだ!と。インパクトだけを大事にしました。


JASON SOEDA: You guys teamed up with Columbia Music Entertainment to create this movie. How did this collaboration actually happen? And why was this film such an important project Toei Film Studio of Kyoto?

みなさんはCMEと組んで映画を作ったそうですが、このコラボレーションプロジェクトのきっかけを教えてください。あと、なぜ、このプロジェクトが東映京都撮影所の中でも重要なプロジェクトとして位置づけられているのかについても知りたいです。

KEN TAKAHASHI: It all started when I met Mr. Hirose (CEO, Columbia Music Entertainment Inc) at an IT business lecture series, which was conducted by Kyoto Prefecture Government some years ago. The purpose of this lecture series was to consider investments in facilities for Kyoto movie studios.

Mr. Hirose was a guest speaker at the first seminar. Then Mr. Hirose visited Toei Kyoto Movie Studio and he considered the possibilities of a new media business and future film production business. That is what inspired us to go ahead with this collaborative project. It's a very important project for us because this project is a challenge to build a cutting-edge business model to strengthen and solidify Kyoto's movie industry. If our project becomes a success, we'll be able to develop human resource (young talented filmmaker) programs and devise a new mechanism of distribution.

きっかけは、デジタルベースの設備投資を京都の映画製作会社が共同で行うことに向けての京都府主導の研究会です。この研究会の最初の講師が日本のIT業界の顔であり、IBM・アスキー・セガを経てコロムビアミュージックエンタテインメントのCEOになった廣瀬禎彦さんだったことです。廣瀬さんが東映の撮影所を見て可能性を感じられ、両社で共同の事業を模索して作り上げたプロジェクトです。 このプロジェクト自体が我々にとって重要なのは、既存のビジネスモデルに変化が迫っている中で、あらたなビジネスモデルへのチャレンジだからです。事業として成立できれば、若手の育成、新たな流通、といった芽が出ます。

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: As Takahashi san said, we expect this project will become a cutting-edge business model for us. It's really something, cooperating with Columbia Music Entertainment to create an innovative samurai movie like METAL SAMURAI. It's just like a baseball team, and we've found a new starter in the rotation!

こういった斬新な作品を自社だけでなくコロムビアさんという素晴らしいパートナーを得て作り上げた事で、今後のビジネスモデルの一つになり得ると期待しているからです。野球で言うと先発ローテーションの谷間が埋まった、みたいな感じ。


JASON SOEDA: In your opinion, how will the general movie going public in Japan respond to this film?

あなたの意見として、日本で一般的に映画をみる大衆はこの映画にどんな反応を示すと思いますか?

TAKAHASHI-SAN: Recently, there are many feature films, where the narrative gradually builds up and you're forced to pay attention to every detail just to follow the story. METAL SAMURAI, however, is different. All you have to do is watch and enjoy and you'll be fine. You cannot help but smile and laugh.

説明のための説明を時間かけて描写するドラマが増えてきた中で、見れば判る、この映画は躊躇うことの無い爆笑を誘うでしょう。

KANESAKI-SAN: Our movie is "silly!" otherwise it's funny. Metal Samurai uses typical comedy phrases. But we can find like a familiar face, feeling, and object in our movie. This is a good recycle model of past films and episodes.

いい意味で「くだらない!」。日本でスタンダードとされている内容の再利用。「いたいた!こんな奴」って感じ。

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: Perhaps you'll get a cheap laugh. Or you may say "How strange!" But, please, just watch our film and give it a chance!

「おっ!バカバカしい事やってんな~」「なんじゃ、こりゃ」と暖かく見守ってもらいたいです。


JASON SOEDA: In Hawaii, many Japanese-Americans like myself grew up watching Jidaigeki like ABARENBO SHOGUN. I can honestly say, we have never seen anything like METAL SAMURAI! How would you like LVHIFF moviegoers to react to this film?

ハワイでは、私を含めてたくさんの日系アメリカ人が暴れん坊将軍などの時代劇を見て育ちました。でも、正直に申し上げると、私はメタル侍みたいな作品はみたことがありません!今回国際映画祭に集う観客にはどんな反応を期待していますか?

KANESAKI-SAN: I have high expectations this film will make everyone laugh. And hey, if you want, feel free to say "That's such crap!" or "That's total nonsense!" during the film!

観客の皆さんにはとにかく「笑い」を期待。「くだらねぇ!」「馬鹿だねぇ!」って感じで突っ込みながら見てもらいたい。

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: That goes for me, too. I have never seen such a ridiculous film! But that's what makes it fun. Please relax and enjoy our film!

私も日本でこんな作品を観た事はありません(笑) リラックスして大笑いをしてもらいたいです.

TAKAHASHI-SAN: Our intention was to make a simple comedy samurai movie without having to ask serious questions. For example, where does the Metal Samurai come from? Why does he wear the white make-up? That's not important. Just have fun, eat lots of popcorn and enjoy.

メタル侍はどこから来たのか、なぜ白塗りなのか、といった疑問不要の判りやすいドラマを作りました。 ためらわずにポップコーンを放り投げて馬鹿笑いしてもらえたらサイコーです


JASON SOEDA: Many Americans love Japanese cult movies. I have a feeling they're going to love METAL SAMURAI! Do you think it's surprising or strange that Americans love Japanese cinema?

アメリカ人の多くは、日本の文化も言葉もわからないんだけど、日本映画が大好きです。そこで、質問です。みなさんは、アメリカ人が、たとえばメタル侍のような日本映画が大好きなこと おどいたり、変だなと思う事はありますか?

TAKAHASHI-SAN: Actually, I was in charge of making "Abarenbo Shogun" as my first filmmaking in Kyoto. I made many of the rowdy Abarenbo episodes!

Hawaii people are refreshingly terrific and strange! They still like shows like "Abarenbo Shogun" while Japanese audiences have long since become bored of Abarenbo Shogun ...

私は映画界のキャリアを暴れん坊将軍からスタートして、数多くの暴れん坊を作ってきました。日本の視聴者に飽きられた暴れん坊将軍を見続けてくれるハワイはサイコーに変です!


JASON SOEDA: What were the biggest challenges in the production of this movie?

映画製作の中で、大きな挑戦だったとおもわれたことは何ですか?

KANESAKI-SAN: To make comedic samurai films at our well established Kyoto movie studio.

京都撮影所で時代劇をコメディとして作る事。

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: Toei threw away their pride so we could make a funny samurai movie. However, METAL SAMURAI still holds up to our standards for high-end technology and quality.

本格派時代劇を作り続けてきた東映がプライドを捨て、バカバカしい作品を作った。なおかつ、高いクオリティを維持できた.

TAKAHASHI-SAN: This is our first challenge as a young team (including the director, cinematographer, and producers) to shoot a samurai movie.

監督、カメラマン、照明技師、プロデューサー・・・、若手のスタッフのみでチームを組んだことです


JASON SOEDA: What were your triumphs?

(この映画で)あなたの功績だと思う事は何ですか?

TAKAHASHI-SAN: I sparked this revolution.

最初の火を点けたことです

KANESAKI-SAN: I'm happy that I could start a new tradition of moviegoers shouting "That's so funny!" or "That's such crap!" in a samurai film.

JASON SOEDA: What do you hope to accomplish at the 28th LVHIFF?

今回の国際映画祭の達成目標などあれば教えてください。

KANESAKI-SAN: What I expect for people to get out of it, around the world, is to know about our film, METAL SAMURAI. And we just want to make people laugh.

メタル侍をより多くの人に知ってもらい「笑って」もらう事。

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: We want people to see our film. We want it to be a success … and we want to see everyone smile!

多くの国の人に観てもらい、最後には優勝したい。笑って欲しい!

TAKAHASHI-SAN: Please tell everyone you know to come to the screening!

JASON SOEDA: Can you tell us about Toei Film Studio's upcoming projects?

今後の東映京都のプロジェクトについて教えていただけますか?

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: We want to provide films to be enjoyed by foreign audiences. We'd like to keep our traditional (samurai) filmmaking style.

時代劇の伝統様式を守りつつ、海外の人にも喜んでもらえる作品を提供していきたいです。

TAKAHASHI-SAN: We are setting up a new, big budget (1.5 billion yen) feature film. But we are also preparing a minimum budget experimental film project. We're getting ready to make various film projects.

製作費15億の戦国超大作「火天の城」から、極小の実験プロジェクトまで、大小、いろいろと準備中です


JASON SOEDA: Besides the film festival, how do you plan to enjoy Hawaii?

折角、国際映画祭でハワイにいらしているので、なにかやりたいことや 楽しみにしていることなどあれば、教えてください。

TAKAHASHI-SAN: I want to find a sight for sore eyes.

目の保養

KANESAKI-SAN: I want to go to the beach then I want to get a tan.

とりあえず、海。(今年まだ泳いでないし)日焼け。(日本に帰った時優越感にひたれるように)

FUKUSHIMA-SAN: I want to enjoy a barbecue on the beach with beautiful sunset, then I want to say "Cheers!" But only if I have time ...

夕日を眺めながらバーベキュー、そして乾杯!時間があればですけど。

BOYS OVER FLOWERS - THE MOVIE

The story takes place four years after high school, and Tsukasa has just proposed to Tsukushi on national television. When Tsukushi and Tsukasa are alone in Tsukushi's cavernous hotel suite, a thief brazenly breaks in and steals the tiara right from under their noses. Tsukasa gives chase, but the thief is too quick and wily - and has powerful, unseen allies. After failing to grab him at the hotel, Tsukasa gets word that the thief and tiara are in Las Vegas. Together he and a determined Tsukushi fly to America - and the start of a strange and dangerous, if giddily romantic, adventure that leads to Hong Kong and other exotic locales. His best buddies lend their support, though Tsukushi begins to suspect one, the tall, silky smooth Rui Hanazawa, of being in cahoots with the bad guys.
