2006 Educational Programs
For the 2006 Festival, LVHIFF invited students throughout the state of Hawaii to submit entries for the second annual Student Showcase, a new section of the Festival devoted to presenting the best videos from primary and secondary school students. A selection of eleven films, including animations, narrative, experimental and documentary shorts were selected for exhibition. The Showcase featured films from Kaiser High School, Hawaii Baptist Academy, Punahou School, The Kamehameha Schools and the Kanuikapono School on Kauai. Their work was impressive! Student Showcase Screenings were held on Oahu at the Regal Dole Stadium 18 on October 28. Admission was free and open to the general public. Click on this link for more program information.
Cultural and Visual Literacy (CVLP) Under the aegis of the Festival's Cultural and Visual Literacy Program, observing now its fifteenth year, teachers have used screenings of some of the Festival's critically acclaimed films to enrich classes ranging from Social Studies and Language Arts to Media Prodcution and Character Education. In 2006, over 500 elementary, intermediate, and high school students attended the screenings of EVE AND THE FIRE HORSE, OUR TWISTED HERO and ALWAYS SUNSET ON THIRD STREET, which were offered free of charge at the Signature Dole Cannery 18 Theatres on the island of Oahu during October 23– 26, 2006.
Directors Julia Kwan (EVE AND THE FIRE HORSE), Justin Lin (ANNAPOLIS), Vince Keala Lucero (WAHINE O KE KAI) and Ham Tran (JOURNEY FROM THE FALL) joined moderator Konrad Ng, Ph.D., Film Program Manager at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and shared insights with and engaged local students in discussion of the film industry. The theme of this year's seminar was "You Can Do It!" The purposes of this seminar are to inspire students to puruse excellence in video production and to broaden their understanding of the media field.
The 2006 Guest Filmmaker Program brought over a dozen actors, directors and industry figures into the classrooms of Oahu schools to inspire students, share expertise, and broaden students' awareness of educational and career opportunities in the media field. In cooperation with the State of Hawaii Department of Education Teleschool Branch, the Festival also connected students throughout the Hawaiian Archipelago with talented media professionals via video conference.
