Creative Lab Writers Accelerator

MISSION:

The mission of the Hawaii International Film Festival Creative Lab Writers Accelerator (HIFF CL WA) is to identify excellent diverse writers in order to provide 12 participants with an opportunity to deepen their relationship with their craft, provide them with on the ground/real life coaching on the business of writing, and provide them with an opportunity with which to create a plan to assist them in taking their next steps in their professional careers.

EXECUTION:

HIFF CL WA will execute its mission in the following manner:

  1. Provide 12 participants with a Writers Accelerator program that will offer them individual creative notes on their stories in order to develop their material; coaching from entertainment industry professionals from the Writers Guild of America West, and the Screen Actors Guild.
  2. Provide 12 participants with a 360-degree view on the business of entertainment, with which they will create a plan for taking the next steps in their careers and their projects.
  3. Encourage the 12 participants to continue their participation in each other’s careers extending beyond the HIFF CL WA.
  4. Provide 12 participants with a 10 month coaching program with the HIFF CL WA Director, which will consist of a monthly group call to address any issue and/or concerns that have come up since the HIFF CL WA.
  5. Select 3 participants who will be flown to Los Angeles, and participate in a week long, immersive program that will include meetings with industry experts, and experience the business of writing and producing first hand via visits to production offices of television, feature film and/or broadband projects currently in production

 

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Potential Participants must provide HIFF CL WA with the following material:

  1. Curriculum Vitae/Resume/Bio:  Participants are asked to provide HIFF CL WA with a document that gives a thorough understanding of the individual’s education, career, and major accomplishments.
  2. A two-page synopsis of the project that participants are choosing to bring into the HIFF CL WA.
  3. A copy of the script of the broadband series, motion picture or television project that participants are choosing to bring into the HIFF CL WA.
  4. Links to produced works that may be viewed online.
  5. Participants must submit an application and signed release form together with the submitted material.
  6. Participants must submit proof of WGA script registration or copyright registration for their material. Material may be registered at www.wga.org or www.copyright.gov.
  7. Application Fee: Waived for 2014. 

Note: Please be advised that all material should be submitted in PDF format. Any material that is submitted which does not follow proper format and/or contains an unacceptable number of typographical errors will be automatically rejected.

SELECTION PROCESS:

There is a three-step process in the assessment of potential participants:

Step 1 – Submission of Materials for Inclusion in Program:  Participants are required to submit the following material for consideration:

  1. Curriculum Vitae/Resume/Bio:  Participants are asked to provide HIFF CL WA with a document that gives a thorough understanding of the individual’s education, career, and major accomplishments.
  2. A two-page synopsis of the project that participants are choosing to bring into the HIFF CL WA.

This material will be reviewed and assessed by HIFF CL WA Director and staff. Eighteen semi-finalists will be chosen from the submissions.

Step 2 – HIFF CL WA Director will contact the 18 semi-finalists and schedule an interview on the phone. Participants who will not be advancing into the next round will be informed and encouraged to apply next year.

The interview with each of the 18 semi-finalists will address the following:

  1. The passion and commitment that potential participants possess in taking their career to the next level.
  2. The passion and commitment that potential participants possess in succeeding in the HIFF CL WA and their ability to take comments, direction, and critiques.
  3. The passion and commitment that potential participants possess for helping others in the program to achieve their goals, and be vibrant participants in this community.

Step 3 – HIFF CL WA Director forwards the 18 semi-finalists scripts to WGA Diversity Program staff. They will weigh in on the semi-finalists, and will aid the Director of HIFF CL WA and the HIFF staff in choosing the 12 finalists for the program.

Step 4 – HIFF CL WA Director informs 18 participants as to which participants have been chosen to participate in the 2013 HIFF CL WA.

Step 5 – At the end of the HIFF CL WA, the Director of the program, and Writing Coaches will select three participants from the 12 who will participate in a week-long immersive experience in Los Angeles.
