HIFF35 is honored to host three Asian stars who encapsulate the true meaning of renaissance and award winning in their fields. Firstly, Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue is this year’s Career Achievement Award honoree, for her prolific body of work in Japanese media (starting off as a child star and J-pop singer) and is featured in this year’s world premiere screening of HANA’s MISO SOUP.

Tadanobu Asano, on the other hand, personifies “Japanese cool” and has been referred to as “Japan’s Johnny Depp” appearing in award winning and cult classic films for over 20 years. He is this year’s Maverick Award honoree. We will also be presenting his latest film, JOURNEY TO THE SHORE.

Finally, this year’s Renaissance Award honoree is Korea’s Ha Jung-woo. Making his major debut in the serial killer thriller THE CHASER, Ha has not only become an accomplished actor, but also a director, with two features under his belt, and an admired painter, with recent major exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. He also has a beloved affinity for Hawaii and stars as a mysterious assassin aptly named “Hawaii Pistol” in one of the biggest hits of the year, ASSASSINATION, which is also screening at HIFF.
