Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in this year’s Oscar Party.
This year’s Oscar Night America party to benefit the Hawaii International Film Festival was a definite success. We had close to 300 people attend at the newly remodeled Royal Hawaiian Hotel. over 100 silent auction items that ranged from an engraved 2009 Oscars bottle of champagne, a briefcase by Louis Vuitton, hotel stays, restaurant and salon gift certificates, prints by Hawai’i artist Peggy Chun, to props from Leatherheads and House.
We were also mentioned by Roger Ebert in his recent Oscar review, here’s an excerpt. See the complete list of winners on our website here.
Japan’s “Departures” was the somewhat surprising winner of the foreign film category. Unseen in the United States, except at the 2008 Hawaii Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, it tells the story of an unemployed cellist who finds work as a funeral expediter and counselor. Credit for the award is perhaps due to an academy reform requiring all voters to have seen every film in the category.
Also, don’t forget that our Spring Showcase this year will be held from April 3-9, at the Dole Cannery Theaters. More information on the films we’ll be screening will be coming very soon.
