Spring Showcase Preview: A GOOD RAIN KNOWS
A GOOD RAIN KNOWS (호우시절)
This cross cultural romance set in Sichuan (China) stars Korean heartthrob Jung Woo-sung (The Good, The Bad, The Weird - HIFF 2008) and mainland Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan.
Korean executive Park Dong-ha (Jung) goes to Sichuan for a business meeting and encounters May (Gao), an English language tour guide whom he knows from their time studying at a college in the U.S. Only together for a short, intense period, they re-explore their feelings for each other.
A Good Rain Knows was originally supposed to be part of a Chengdu themed, three part film, but ended up being released on its own. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, was ravaged in 2008 by the Wenchuan earthquake. Director Hur Jin-ho perfectly captures Chengdu's sights and sounds, as it's one of Southwest China's premier tourist destinations. The title of the film is inspired by classic Chinese author Du Fu's poem 春夜喜雨 (Drenched by Rainy Delight on a Spring Night), in which he says that a good rain knows when to come in spring and bring nature back to life.
