Sci-fi, horror, action, and more! HIFF’s Genre film line-up at Spring Showcase 2014

HIFF has an awesome line-up of genre films at Spring Showcase 2014. From heart-pounding action to futuristic science fiction, this year’s Spring festival is packed with exciting, fun, cutting edge titles for the genre fan in all of us…

Get ready for some action with these edge-of-your-seat titles:

1. FIRESTORM

A crew of seasoned criminals led by the notorious Nam (Hu Jun), pulls off another smooth and violent armored car heist in broad daylight. Whoever tries to get in their way, they show no mercy. This humiliates and shames the police force. A hardboiled senior police inspector Lui (Andy Lau), hot on the trails of Nam, determines to put an end to this madness. But he soon comes face to face with the cruel reality that the usual police tactics are too futile to send these armed thieves behind bars. Extreme crime requires extreme justice, even if it means crossing his moral line…

Director Derek Kwok presents star-studded, action-packed firefighter drama AS THE LIGHTS GO OUT. A huge hit in Hong Kong and mainland China, AS THE LIGHTS GO OUT follows a team of crack firefighters on what turns out to be the longest day of their lives. Sam (Nicholas Tse) is on his last day at the job at the firestation before transfering to another position, when mysterious smoke at a wine factory calls him to duty. Accompanying him, his comrade Chill (Shawn Yue) and veteran Major Lee (Simon Yam) rush to the scene. They quickly resolve the situation, but all is not what it seems, and where there is smoke there is fire….

3. ONCE UPON A TIME IN VIETNAM

In a small town crime boss Long is buying up land and bullying its residents out of their homes and businesses. All that stands in his way is Hien, the neighborhood baker and his wife Ahn. Facing the strong arm tactics of the crime boss and his cronies, the couple strive to unify the scared locals to protect what remains of an once innocent and peaceful way of life. Their luck changes when a mysterious stranger named Dao (Dustin Nguyen) rides into town. They enlist his help to balance the fight against Long and his cohorts.  But Dao has terrible secrets of his own.

RIGOR MORTIS is an audacious and visually stunning debut that establishes Hong Kong pop star-turned-director Juno Mak as a filmmaking talent to be reckoned with. An ominous-looking public-housing tower is the final rest stop for a miserable former movie star (Chin) who’s mourning the loss of his wife and son. Filled with the old, the weary, and the forgotten remnants of society, this last chance hotel nonetheless contains many comforts of Hong Kong life — a noodle shop, a seamstress and a Taoist monk. Ghosts and spirits already haunt its hallways, but when a distraught widow tries to bring her husband back from the dead, the tenement is plunged into a dark storm of supernatural chaos.

Unsettled by the shabby, half-empty apartment complex, he quickly notices strange symbols inscribed under the doorbells and the terrified residents who hurriedly lock their doors. Soon after his visit, Sung-soo finds his family home stalked by a mysterious figure, and the same strange symbols appear under their doorbell. Sung-soo must face his most primal fears to reveal the shocking truth behind the intensifying horror…
