Final film lineup for 2012 HIFF Spring Showcase is set


The Descendants Returns to the Festival with a Panel Discussion and Live Concert


HONOLULU, HI — (Thursday, March 15, 2012)  —  The Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) has finalized its film schedule for the 15th annual Spring Showcase from April 13-19. This year HIFF is showcasing 34 films at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theatres & IMAX over the course of seven days. Along with the films, HIFF is presenting a live concert entitled “Sound X Vision: Music from The Descendants” sponsored by DBEDT-Creative Industries and The Recording Academy.

Countries represented in this year’s spring film program are China, France, United States, Taiwan, Japan, India, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, U.K., and Norway. These worldwide films include 24 Hawaii premieres, 8 U.S. premieres, and one return engagement.

Arguably the most popular film at last year’s Hawaii International Film Festival presented by Halekulani, THE DESCENDANTS has been riding a wave of success unlike any other based in Hawaii film. The Festival is offering a free screening of the film on Saturday, April 14 at 12:00 p.m., and is pleased to welcome Music Supervisor Dondi Bastone as well as soundtrack musicians Jeff Peterson and Cyril Pahinui for a Q&A directly after the film at Regal Dole Cannery Theatres & IMAX. Guests will also be able to enjoy musicians featured in the film playing later that day in a live concert at The Venue. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the live concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance at and $30 at the door.

Film tickets go on sale to HIFF Ohana members on Monday, April 2 and to the general public on Wednesday, April 4. General tickets for the public are available for $12, $10 for seniors, students and military. HIFF Ohana members can purchase tickets for $8. Opening Night

Yunnan province in 1917. Liu Jinxi (Donnie Yen) is a modest family man whose peaceful world is ripped apart when two bandits burst into town and rob a local store. Initiated by the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, twenty outstanding Taiwanese directors were each asked to create one five-minute short film inspired by the same topic: the uniqueness of their country. The resulting stories and documentaries, which did not have to adhere to any kind of dictates, either formally or in terms of content, provide an astonishingly multifaceted panorama of Taiwanese society. Hou Hsiao-Hsien, one of the leading proponents of Taiwanese new wave cinema, opens and closes this portmanteau film with his minimalistic tale LA BELLE EPOQUE which focuses on the primal cell of any society – the family unit. An unusual film project that gives us an impressive array of food for thought.

Having barely won his first such trial, fledgling attorney Phoenix Wright suddenly gets a huge case dropped in his lap when his boss gets killed and an innocent is framed for the crime. Phoenix sets out to expose the truth and fight for justice, but he inadvertently opens a cesspool where prosecutors leave no dirty trick unused, evidence gets tampered with, witnesses are silenced, ancient cases get reopened and trials lead to more trials.

A cross between Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer (TV series ’24’), Khan’s dark and mysterious super spy gets embroiled in an espionage plot involving Kapoor’s sleek Pakistani spy, but presumably manages to win her charms and save the world.

Sparks fly when he gets tied to Ae-yeon during the heist, but he puts this aside after his friend and private detective Bok-nam (Oh Jeong-se) says he has tracked down Na-ri. Alas, things get more complicated as the truth behind Na-ri’s absence becomes clear, and Ae-yeon has troubles of her own.
