THE LOST TRIVIA OF INDIANA JONES
Tonight is CULTURE + ARTS @ KO OLINA – an outdoor film screening festival for the entire family – screening Steven Spielberg's 1981 baby RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. It's a total classic and if you haven't seen it then I'm sorry you weren't hugged as a child.
But here's your chance...! Your chance to see Harrison Ford in all his bomber jacket glory and wonder what ever happened to Karen Allen she was kinda cool.
Now calm down, I got some Indiana Jones trivia after the jump...
- Tom Selleck was Spielberg's second choice for the Indiana Jones role. Harrison Ford was his first, but George Lucas objected since Ford had been in both AMERICAN GRAFFITI and STAR WARS. Selleck wasn't able to commit to the role because he was already doing MAGNUM, P.I. So, basically, thank you Hawaii for existing because I just can't imagine Selleck as Jones. Well, I mean, I can, but I don't wanna.
- Indy's battered leather jacket was actually brand new and had to be artificially aged by the costume department. Hey, hipsters, take a cue from Dr. Jones and don't feel bad about your "authentically distressed" outerwear.
- Alfred Molina's screen debut. He's the double-crossing tour guide in the opening sequence who ends up covered in tarantulas. Two decades later he plays Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2... Foreshadowing!
- Indy's line to Marion when they are on the ship, "It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage" was ad-libbed by Ford. Hot.
- Indiana Jones's name came from the name of George Lucas's dog. The dog was also the inspiration for Chewbacca in STAR WARS. Man(kind)'s Best Friend, obvi.
THIS IS THE BEST ONE SO READ IT:
- Traditionally when one of his films is about to open, George Lucas goes to holiday to get away from all the hoopla. As STAR WARS was about to open, Lucas went to Hawaii where he was joined by Steven Spielberg. When the grosses for STAR WARS came in, it was clear it was going to be a hit, Lucas relaxed and was able to discuss other topics with Spielberg. It was at this point Spielberg confessed he always wanted to direct a James Bond film. Lucas said he had a better idea – an adventure movie called RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. They talked about it while building a sand castle. After their trip, they got together and made RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
Which means that tonight you'll be watching RAIDERS where it all started...on a beach!
