HORROR AT HIFF W/ THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

[img_assist|nid=195|title=THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, HIFF 2009|desc=Tom Noonan Wants Your First Born!|link=none|align=left|width=240|height=159]I cannot emphasize how cool and scary is (and recently added film to HIFF 2009) THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL! Director Ti West has realistically captured a late 70s/early 80s; an ode to horror films with a slow burn but resonant payoff after you leave the theater. THOTD looks and feels as if it was made in 1982 (the year the film takes place). If it weren’t for an older looking Tom Noonan as the creepy home owner, you would’ve thought that the offbeat character actor shot this before his seminal performance in MANHUNTER.

Populated with indie actors who have appeared in several Mumblecore films, THOTD keeps it simple. Young, raven haired beauty needs money and accepts babysitting job in scary house. She meets the creepy owners and has second thoughts, but hey, she’s going to get paid pretty well to stay in a creeky house and make rent. And then… the Satanists come marching in. ‘Nuff said. What’s not to love but a scary night at the movies?
