European films at the HIFF Spring Showcase

The HIFF Spring Showcase has 4 European productions and European themed films that showcase a breadth of subjects and stories — Ranging from the sweeping adventure of the British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett and his travails in the Amazon in THE LOST CITY OF Z, which closed the New York Film Festival; A woman who is considered one of America’s greatest writers, but was entirely ignored when she was alive in A QUIET PASSION; LAST MEN IN ALEPPO, a Danish production and also Sundance world premiere, meticulously and death defyingly chronicled the current Syrian crisis in gritty detail; and the magical realism love story THIS BEAUTIFUL FANTASTIC, which is reminiscent of such films like AMÉLIE.

The latest from UK director Terence Davies (THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, A QUIET PASSION is the story of American poet Emily Dickinson (Cynthia Nixon) from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive, unrecognized artist.

LAST MEN IN ALEPPO

After five years of war in Syria, Aleppo’s remaining residents prepare themselves for a siege. LAST MEN IN ALEPPO is a production of Denmark.
