HIFF Festival Trailer premiere: Wed. Oct 7th at 5PM

Ticket sales have now started for the general public, and we premiered the HIFF festival trailer (starring Daniel Dae Kim, from LOST) at our Sneak Peek last week. We’ll be putting the festival trailer online for everyone to view starting on Wednesday October 7th at 5pm. It will be posted here on our blog. If you haven’t seen our PSA yet, it’s sort of a teaser for the full trailer. For some teaser images: Read More

Japanese Anime Films at HIFF

We have three anime films in this year’s festival. They are: EVANGELION 2.0 YOU CAN (NOT) ADVANCE, FIRST SQUAD: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, and MAI MAI MIRACLE. Click on the title of this post above to see more information about these animated films.

Vote for your favorite Local Short Film with Video on Demand – Oct. 1-19

You can help choose a winner at the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) by voting for your favorite film before it even premieres!  Starting Thursday, October 1st, The ‘Viewers Choice Award,’ powered by Oceanic Time Warner Cable and presented by Central Pacific Bank, invites subscribers to support Hawaii filmmaking by choosing their favorite Hawaii-made short film at this year’s 29th annual Hawaii International Film Festival.  Viewers will be allowed to vote until Monday, October 19th at midnight. We have our first schedule update of the festival.  These updates have already been made on the online guide and ticketing, so this message is for all people using the e-books.  The Oct. 16 screening of RASHOMON now begins at 7:00 PM and the Oct. 16 screening of EARTH DAYS is now moved to 9:30 PM.  Please keep this in mind once the user guide and program book come out.

Conceptualizing Your Film Festival Viewing Schedule

I had lunch with a former board member and one of HIFF’s most devoted film patrons (he and his wife watch, on average, 25 – 30 films per festival). Before we ordered, he takes out a document from his back pocket and showed me something that looked like something out of a fantasy football league score sheet. Instead, it was his “scoring system” of HIFF films that he intends to watch and eventually map out schedule-wise. I was intrigued because he had a unique scoring and color coded system. Red indicated that he saw the trailer online and really liked it, for example. Now, these are films he has not seen yet, but after pouring through the program online for several hours, he assessed each title with his speculative score. Read More

Availability of Printed Program Guides

This year’s HIFF Program Guide will come in two different versions. The first we’re calling our Program Book, a glossy publication available to delegates, members and sponsors at no charge, and available for purchase by the general public at $5 each. The second version will be our User Guide, a newsprint version available free of charge to anyone. It will still contain all of the film and event information, schedule times, but will be more brief than the Program Book.

These printed program guides are now available to pick up/purchase at the HIFF Box Office, across the street from the Dole Cannery theaters. User Guides are now also available at Best Buy locations in Iwilei and Aiea, Aloha Salads and Whole Foods in Kahala, and 5 L&L Barbecue locations:

New Features in our Online Program Guide

Film Trailers!

We’ve worked hard this year to make film trailers available on our online program guide, and you can also view them on our homepage, as well as our YouTube Channel. When you mouse over the featured films on the home page, many of them will have a ‘View Trailer’ link that you can click on.

B-Side’s “Schedule Genius Wizard”

The Schedule Genius is a new feature this year, which will look at the screenings you have added to your personal calendar and automatically find and fix schedule conflicts, suggest alternate screenings, and will make sure you get to see the films you want to see. In addition, you can now download or print your personal calendar or the full schedule of films & events.

HIFF 2009 Program Book

I have to give a big mahalo to Chris who worked so hard getting our 2009 program book on-line so quickly.  I showed my mom the on-line book and the two films she put on her must watch list are: MOTHER (opening night film) and 20TH CENTURY BOYS PT. 3: REDEMPTION.  We are showing parts 1 & 2 again for all of you who weren’t able to see it this past Spring.  What do you want to see most?
