HIFF at Hilo – October 26 to 30

The weekend after our festival concludes on O’ahu, we’re bringing a selection of films to Hilo on the Big Island. All of these films will be playing at the Hilo Palace Theatre. Tickets are $7 General, $6 Seniors & Students, $5 Palace ‘Stars’. On sale at the Palace Theater Box Office 10am-3pm weekdays. Call 808-934-7010 to purchase tickets by phone with a credit card. Last Tuesday evening at Washington Place, the Governor’s residence, HIFF congratulated the winners of its various awards. HIFF was proud to present the Hawaii Premiere of JAKE SHIMABUKURO: LIFE ON FOUR STRINGS last Tuesday evening at the Hawaii Theatre Center. This documentary about Hawaii’s famous ukulele player was made possible by funding from the Center for Asian American Media, Pacific Islanders in Communications and PBS Hawaii. The Hawaii Theatre was packed with locals coming out to support Jake. After the film concluded, Jake talked for a little bit and played a couple of songs for the audience.

We held a reception at Halekulani last Monday evening to honor the six delegates in this year’s New American Filmmakers program. This is a section of films curated by HIFF and the Vilcek Foundation where at least one of the participants is an American immigrant. This year’s delegates are:

Photos from Japan Reception with Kōji Yakusho

Last Sunday, HIFF held a reception at the Halekulani Garden Terrace to welcome “Japan’s Leading Man”, Kōji Yakusho, to Hawaii. You may recognize him from films such as TAMPOPO (1985), SHALL WE DANCE (1996), and more recently, 13 ASSASSINS (2010) & CHRONICLE OF MY MOTHER (2011). Many of his films have played at HIFF over the years, and we’re proud to present the Hawaii premiere of THE WOODSMAN AND THE RAIN.
