Spotlight on India showcases the diversity in high entertainment to exploring India’s social issues

This year’s SPOTLIGHT ON INDIA presented by the J. Watumull Fund is a broad cross-section on the best in Indian and diaspora cinema. Included in the section are the two biggest blockbusters of the year, the Bollywood hit film BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN starring Salman Khan; the Tollywood historic action epic BAAHUBALI-THE BEGINNING (think the spectacle of SPARTACUS and LORD OF THE RINGS), as well as the award winning courtroom drama COURT, which is also India’s official entry to the Oscars foreign…

The film festival programmers are honored to book an advance sneak peek and Hawaii premiere of the immigrant drama BROOKLYN starring Saorsie Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Kim Broadbent, and Julie Walters and based on the screenplay by award winning writer Nick Hornby (HIGH FIDELITY).

The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film…

Made in Hawaii Films shine this year at HIFF35

It’s been a stellar year for locally made films, which are highlighted in our MADE IN HAWAII section, as well as the PACIFIC SHOWCASE presented by Pacific Islanders in Communications. The films range from 3 narrative features, a look back at the elder statesmen who helped shape our 50th state, a timely doc that explores the housing and homelessness crises in Honolulu, and documentaries that look back in remembrance, while looking forward to the future to fulfill one’s destiny for t…

The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. HIFF Spring Showcase Programmer’s Picks: Anderson’s Favorites for Closing Weekend

Hello, true believers, it’s Anderson, director of programming for the Hawaii International Film Festival. I am blogging from Dallas, Texas and not from the humble and slightly cluttered HIFF office located across the street from the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18. Why the heck am I in Dallas? Well, I was graciously invited to be on the Narrative Feature Jury at the Dallas International Film Festival, which means I had to leave mid-way through the Spring Showcase.

I am slightly sad that I am…

The programming team has also finally scheduled the three TBA slots that are scheduled on the final day of the Spring Showcase, Sunday, April 19. The location, as always, is the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18. T…

HIFF Spring Showcase Programmer’s Picks: Anderson’s Recommendations for Opening Weekend

The 2015 HIFF Spring Showcase starts today! We’re very excited to finally show the 34 (we just added another film, DETECTIVE K: SECRET OF THE ISLAND, a few days ago) films from 11 countries that will unspool for the next 10 days in Honolulu. Although the spring showcase is about 1/3 the size of our main film festival in the fall, it can still be daunting to make a decision on what films to see.

Well, that’s where I am here to help! As director of programming, I’ve seen every film that we’v…
