Bollywood Nights at HIFF Spring Showcase
Bollywood fans, unite! The HIFF Spring Showcase (April 13 – 19) has is presenting major films from India, presenting 3 new Bollywood musicals and 1 drama directed by famed director Michael Winterbottom and starring SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’S Freida Pinto. Showcasing the full flavor, sounds and energy of Indian culture through cinema, HIFF’s mission is to transport audiences to far off places and sometimes, what you need is to escape to a realm of song, dance and the rich traditions of a formidable and beloved genre that entertains tens of millions around the globe. Here’s the list of Indian films at HIFF Spring Showcase:
Saif Ali Khan (son of Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan) and Kareena Kapoor, who’s in two films at the Spring Showcase this year, are due to set sparks flying in this BollyBond film inspired by a similar movie released in 1977. A cross between Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer, Khan’s dark and mysterious super spy gets embroiled in an espionage plot involving Kapoor’s sleek Pakistani spy, but presumably manages to win her charms and save the world.
A mix-tape of the greatest Bollywood scenes in film history, this love letter to Bollywood is a stream of consciousness journey through the illustrious and colorful history of one of the most revered genres in all of film. BOLLYWOOD: THE GREAT LOVE STORY EVER TOLD was produced mainly for the Cannes Film Festival last year and HIFF is honored to bring this celebratory film to the big screen in Hawaii! For true Bollywood aficionados!
A romantic comedy starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU takes place where two people, who are complete opposites, have one drunken night in Vegas and end up married. The classic take on the shotgun, drunken Vegas marriage that must get annulled but then they soon learn to appreciate one another and fall in love at the end, the whole enterprise works thanks in part to the cute and endearing performances of Khan and Kapoor.
Directed by acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom, TRISHNA stars Freida Pinto (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE) and Riz Ahmed (CENTURION) and based on Thomas Hardy’s novel “Tess of the d’Urbervilles,” the film is set in contemporary India and tells the tragic love story between the son of a wealthy property developer and the daughter of a rickshaw driver.
