New Screening of THE TEMPEST Sunday at 9:15 PM

We just added one more screening of THE TEMPEST, an adaptation of the play by William Shakespeare. The first two screenings have sold out, so the new screening will be this Sunday at 9:15 PM at Regal Dole Cannery. The film was shot primarily on the islands of Lanai and Hawai’i, and features a dream cast, including Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Tom Conti, Reeve Carney and Felicity Jones.

TIME TO GALA QUE SERA (WITH EUROSTYLE)

At the Moana Surfrider Hotel Diamond Head Lawn 700-10p TONIGHT EuroCinema Hawaii will celebrate the Continent of the Impossible Cool’s finest films with honors including the EuroCinema Hawaii 2010 Princess Dialta Alliata di Montereale Award for Best Film — biting my bottom lip dramatically for CERTIFIED COPY, the best film I’ve seen at HIFF so far — as well as awards for Best Student Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Blogger (KIDDING, Europe!).

With European hor d’oeuvres, champagne and specially created libations (not “drinks,” libations), more than enough to swoon over when E! correspondent Debbie Matenopoulos takes the mic as this evening’s host, and talent like Oscar-winner Richard Dreyfuss in attendance, I think we’ll, say it with me now: Need. A. Bigger. Gala.

So, kick yourself into sartorial high gear (attire is black-tie preferred), get to know the tri-jury, know the differences between your Cabs and Noirs (I will be “researching” all afternoon… at home… alone!), and be sure to watch producer Chris Lee (VALKYRIE, SUPERMAN RETURNS) and the Princess Dialta herself chitty-chat our festival-within-a-festival’s first annual gala on yesterday morning’s “Sunrise” with Hawaii News Now.

You can still get your tickets here or purchase on-site at Will Call.
Proceeds benefit students at the UH Academy for Creative Media.

Mutant Girls Without Men–Oh yah, and a Gala!

Oh MANNN!  Last night I popped by the festival to do a double-header of WOMEN WITHOUT MEN and MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD–BEST. MOVIE. NIGHT. EVER.

WOMEN WITHOUT MEN had the most gorgeous cinematography I’ve seen in a while, complete with a great story and a few laughs.  I’m so glad I caught the second showing.  Speaking of which, have you checked out the list of second showings we’ve recently added to this year’s line-up?  Don’t sleep–we’ve added second showings for a reason!  You won’t regret it.

Anywho, MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD was MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD, if you know what I mean (basically INCREDIBLE).  There are so many disgusting-meets-hilarious moments that left the movie feeling like a roller coaster nose-diving into a giant ocean of blood (in a good way!).   Never a dull moment, prepare to get your face kitsch-ed off.  Two words: Chainsaw butt.

Don’t miss the second showing of MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD this Saturday at 10:15 PM if you missed it last night (or see it again like I’m definitely going to).

Also, the EuroCinema Gala is this evening 7 PM – 10 PM at the Moana Surf Rider in Waikiki.  What does one wear to a Gala? I can’t decide if I want to wear my long black veil or my monster claw / school girl outfit combo–someone help a sister out!

PACK YOUR PASSPORT: IT’S EUROCINEMA HAWAII

HIFF is known for carving out a Pineapple Rim-niche as the world’s premier Asian-Pacific film festival, which is why we’re especially excited for this festival-within-a-festival. So say, Ciao! Salut! Guten Tag! Privet! Hej! Hei! or just plain ol’ Hi! to EUROCINEMA HAWAII officially kicking off tonight with screenings of THE LEOPARD at Doris Duke Theatre and HOW I ENDED THIS SUMMER at Dole Cannery.

I myself am especially excited for visionary director Abbas Kiarostami’s CERTIFIED COPY and the polarizing terrorism-comedy FOUR LIONS from the controversially astute Chris Morris.
