Stories to Light: SFIAAFF 2011

Last weekend, I had the chance to go to the 29th Annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF), so of course, I went! This year's theme was "Stories to Light." Check out their trailer:

HIFF + HUMANHAND

HIFF is honored and excited to announce a new partnership with Humanhand, an independent branding and creative design firm based in Hawaii. We are excited to work with Humanhand for our yearround creative design needs starting with the key visual for Spring Showcase 2011.

Humanhand's portfolio of clients include: Honolulu Academy of Art, MA`O Organic Farms, La Tour Bakehouse & Cafe, and Otto Cake.

Excerpt from Humanhand's mission: "....Exceptional design is not about making things look pretty. It is about providing solutions that are useful, efficient, intelligent, meaningful, relevant, and emotionally engaging...."
"HIFF is Hatching!" is the theme that Humanhand created for this year's Spring Showcase. We love the spring-like colors and brightness and energy, as well as the tag line. HIFF really is "hatching" films for Spring, in fact, we've got 27 films and a few TBAs schedule for Spring Showcase, April 1-7 at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 & IMAX. The schedule is out now...we've officially hatched!

Thank you for your support of our Oscar Night America event!

HIFF is gearing up for our annual fundraiser event, Oscar Night America on Sunday, February 27 at Halekulani. At the event, guests will be able to watch an advance telecast of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, and indulge in a fabulous custom "Oscar" dinner menu. The evening will also include a Red Carpet Walk, Better Brands' Oscar Cocktail Bar, display of 2011 Porsche vehicles, and Bambooth's fun photobooth!

This fabulous event would not be possible without the support of our event sponsors, silent auction donors, and our guests! Thank you!

Quickie Picks: Arts Lovers

Arts and culture lovers, we've got films for you. Dancers and ballerinas: MAO'S LAST DANCER is the true story of Chinese ballet dancer Li Cuixin, and his rise to international fame. The film also stars Joan Chen, Kyle MacLachlan, and Amanda Schull (she's from Hawaii!). Graphic designers and creatives: TYPEFACE is a documentary about the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, WI. For anyone interested in the history of type and design, this film highlights a dying craft that has direct lineage to graphic designers and advertisers today. Photographers and cinematographers: FIBERGLASS AND MEGAPIXELS is a unique surf documentary that focuses on surf photographers and cinematographers. The film is an insightful look into surf documentation and the relationship between surf photographers and cinematographers to the surf industry and surfers. HIFF is proud to present the Hawaii Premiere of FIBERGLASS AND MEGAPIXELS with an extended Q&A with local filmmakers Derek and Craig Hoffman.

Special thanks to Electric Pencil for sponsoring TYPEFACE.
