2013 Festival Trailer

ALOHA AND WELCOME TO THE 33RD HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
PRESENTED BY HALEKULANI.

We have an exciting lineup this year: 209 films from 42 countries, representing a broad cross-section of cinema from around the world, especially with expanded spotlight on Japan and EuroCinema Hawaii. We are also excited to be presenting centennial celebrations of cinema shot and based in Hawaii and India. With the 100th anniversary of film in Hawaii, we are presenting a free screening of BLUE HAWAII at sunset on the beach.

But, the film festival is also a forum for discourse, especially pertaining to film criticism and the study of the moving image. thanks in great part to the Academy for Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS); We have programmed a 10 film retrospective called THE PACIFIC ‘OTHER,’ examining the history of the Pacific Islander in western cinema. This entire film series is free
to the public and hosted entirely at the Honolulu Museum of art Doris Duke Theatre.

Filmmaker in Focus is an annual section that highlights master filmmakers from around the world and the Festival works with various partners to bring them to Hawaii to present their films and also interact with HIFF audiences. This year, we are fortunate to expand this section and host four filmmakers: Dang Nhat Minh from Vietnam; Garin Nugroho from Indonesia; Lu Chuan from China; and Andrew Adamson, who splits his time between new Zealand and the U.S.

We want to specially thank the Vilcek Foundation for their continued support in our New American Filmmakers (NAF) spotlight, which for the first time, includes a slot for highlighting a successful film professional, which Andrew Adamson occupies this year as our inaugural NAF keynote. As the producer-director of SHREK 1 and 2, and the CHRONICLES OF NARNIA series (we are also showing his latest, Mr. PIP), his insight, as well as the other Filmmakers in Focus provide an augmented experience for our HIFF audiences, beyond just straightforward film screenings, but to spark discourse on the creative process and personal insights in working in regional and global film industries.

We are also very proud of the second year of Creative lab at HIFF, a symposium of panels, master classes and workshops pertaining to creative content, with film as its nucleus. The Festival’s initiative to expand our educational and professional development programs is encapsulated in Creative Lab at HIFF. And like the last year, all Creative Lab programs are free to the public.

None of this would be possible without the tremendous support we receive from the Hawaii community and entertainment industry. We want to give special thanks to the Halekulani Corporation for their perennial support as our presenting sponsor. Their world class hotel properties and service are second to none and their sponsorship, along with the support we receive from our other Corporate and Foundation sponsors, Ohana members, HIFF directors, and volunteers, allows us to evolve the Festival as an organization consisting not only of film exhibition, but also education and to become more rooted in Hawaii’s creative and cultural community.

Our wonderful HIFF staff has put together another stellar lineup of film, seminars, and events and we look forward to celebrating international cinema once again with you in Hawaii.

Mahalo nui loa and see you at the movies!
